WOW – how uplifting sitting on a narrow unstable bench amongst Moms and Moms-to-Be in a basic wooden structure and listening to the exchange of questions and sharing of ideas and knowledge.
Women from the rural areas in Dam-se-Bos are invited every Thursday afternoon to join the Edge of Africa initiative – their volunteers warmly welcome everyone with a plate of nutritional food and feedback from the previous workshop. Guidance on nutrition, HIV, maternity benefits, vitamins, suitable maternity clothing, exercise and lots of laughter listening to strange pregnancy cravings. Some chat away in Xhosa whilst others interpret, others take the stage and some listen. ‘Hand in Hand’ everyone learns, shares and a community is helped.
Through a ‘learn to earn’ initiative by Edge of Africa, the ladies earn points for every workshop they attend. The points are exchanged for clothes, blankets, nappies and baby food. A big thank you to Woolworths Knysna for the contribution of babies and toddler clothing and to our Oakhill Moms for the beautiful soft cuddly toys.
Together we are making a difference – Thank you Edge of Africa for allowing us to help with this community project.
