In a run-down flower shop on Skid Row, meek Seymour Krelborn discovers a mysterious plant after a solar eclipse. Naming it Audrey II after his co-worker and secret crush, Seymour soon realizes the plant thrives on human blood. As Audrey II grows, business at the flower shop booms, earning Seymour unexpected fame and affection from Audrey, who dreams of escaping her abusive boyfriend and starting a simple suburban life.
But Audrey II’s hunger escalates. When Seymour fails to provide more blood, the plant promises to fulfill all his dreams—if he feeds it. Seymour allows Audrey’s sadistic boyfriend, Orin the dentist, to die and feeds him to the plant. The plant’s success brings more notoriety, and Mushnik, the shop owner, adopts Seymour to keep him close. When Mushnik grows suspicious of Orin’s disappearance, Seymour lures him into Audrey II’s jaws as well.
Despite his guilt, Seymour continues to feed the plant, fearing he’ll lose Audrey without fame. When Audrey II attacks and fatally wounds Audrey, her dying wish is to be fed to the plant so they can be “together.” Grief-stricken, Seymour learns the plant’s true plan: world domination through cloned cuttings. In a final act of desperation, Seymour destroys Audrey II by electrecuting the plant.
