We were delighted to host our annual regional Kids’ Lit Quiz at Oakhill again on the 15th of February. Seven schools participated with twelve teams competing in a difficult, nail-biting competition. The knowledge these children have is daunting and the end results were very close, with Oakhill winning, Greenwood Bay School coming second and Plett Primary, third.
We are always so grateful that our area is included in a competition of such a high calibre. It was developed by New Zealander, Wayne Mills who reads all current children’s books and creates the quiz himself. He travels around the world, fueling enthusiasm for reading through his quizzes.
Our team of winners, Connie Chorley, Miguel Pieterse, Mia Guccio and Jemima Wilcox-Jones represented Oakhill in the National finals in Johannesburg on Saturday 24th February. Here the competition gets very serious, with a buzzer to press at the risk of losing points with an incorrect answer. Some questions require the name of the book which begins with a line and the children know their books so well that a buzzer was pressed after only two words! And their answer was correct!
We are proud to say that Oakhill came 6th out of 10 schools. We congratulate Manor Gardens from Durban who won the competition and will represent South Africa at the World Finals in New Zealand this July.
